Childhood Years & Schooling My daughter is still too young to go to school, but I did have a wonderful time of studying in Indiana Wesleyan University in Columbus. For me, no matter it is the elementary school, middle school, high school, college or university, the American educational system offers everyone equal and fair opportunities to learn. It also gives everyone enough freedom to present themselves in the classes. It not only teaches the knowledge, but also increasing the ability and helping you find out and develop your potentiality.
How do you preserve and celebrate your heritage and culture? The Chinese Association celebrates our own holidays and festivals. We always welcome all Columbus residents to join us for each activity. We wear our traditional Chinese costumes, cook tradition Chinese food and give cultural performances. I am one of the volunteers in “In the name of love” Performing Arts and we represent Columbus Chinese Association and visit Columbus residents who live in the nursing homes, retirement center or the health and rehab centers. We share the happiness with them and also share our culture with them. All in all, for our culture, we are loyal and we honor it. We are always more than happy to present it when the time is right and when the opportunities are available.
Is there a celebration or festival that you particularly enjoy? Columbus Ethnic Expo. It makes me feel that I am part of the big family of Columbus, not only part of a certain country or group, but one of the family members of Columbus. It is also a good thing to introduce other family members what I learned and what I have from my home country.
What do you enjoy about living in Columbus? The simple and peaceful life style. After fighting a busy day at work, just looking at the smiling faces of the people around you, listening to the sound of tolling bell from the churches, smiling the sweet scent of the flowers along he streets. home in Columbus is the place to calm you down and precipitate your heart.
Was it difficult to adjust to life in Columbus? When you are in Columbus, you are home. You have no difficulties at all when you are living wherever you call it home.
What do you miss about your native country? My family and the unique atmosphere and the irreplaceable feeling of being with family.
What would you like other Columbus residents to know about your native country? There are too many things I would like them to know. But hope, if there are any opportunities, they can take a trip to China. Only when they see it, they would believe it. However, for all Columbus residents who really want to know my country, I would do whatever I can do to help them to learn, to discover.
