Childhood Years & Schooling In China, kids are occupied with home work. As a child, I did not have so much time to play sports and have fun like my kids do in the U.S. Children in the U.S. have more open mind comparing in China we have to listens more.
How do you preserve and celebrate your heritage and culture? As parent, we strongly encourage our kids to study Chinese and Chinese culture as a way to preserve our identity. We often spend time at home teaching our kids Chinese. They also attend Chinese Sunday school.
Is there a celebration or festival that you particularly enjoy? The Chinese New Year celebration is the biggest heritage event for me. The Chinese New Year Party hosted by the Columbus Chinese Association is a way for us to celebrate in U.S.
What do you enjoy about living in Columbus? With the strong culture diversity in Columbus, I do not feel I am living here as a stranger. Columbus is a fair and safe environment, and we feel happy to live here.
Was it difficult to adjust to life in Columbus? We lived in Canada nine years before moving to U.S. The cities we lived there are quite big and they have everything available, especially Chinese food. Here the town is quite small, and it is a little bit difficulty to find what we need and we have to go Indianapolis for shopping some time.
What do you miss about your native country? Family members, relatives, friends, local food.
What would you like other Columbus residents to know about your native country? Most people might know China. It has a long history and it is beautiful, especially the local city Kunming where I came from. It was also named Spring City, as the year around temperature is like spring.
